The first meeting in New Braunfels for the New Braunfels - Seguin Regional Transportation Plan was on May 18, 2011. This meeting provided an overview of a Metropolitan Planning Organization and the process for Regional Transportation planning was reviewed. Information from each meeting can be found below under the Meeting Details link under the related date.
At the meeting on June 20, 2011 street, transit, bicycle and pedestrian concepts were reviewed for the Preliminary Regional Transportation Plan and additional public input was gathered to inform the draft. We encourage you to continue to participate or become involved in the meetings and welcome any feedback that you may have.
Results of the public input were visible in the draft roadway network that was presented at the July 8, 2011 meeting where additional public input was gathered for refinement of the plan. The refined draft was presented to the City Council and Planning Commission at a joint workshop on September 6, 2011.
A public hearing before the Planning Commission is scheduled for October 11, 2011 followed by a public hearing before City Council on October 24, 2011.
Metropolitan Planning Organizations
In 1962, the United States Congress passed legislation requiring the formation of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) for all census designated urbanized areas (UZAs) with populations greater than 50,000. MPOs plan and program funding for transportation projects at a regional level. This establishes region-wide plans developed through intergovernmental collaboration, rational analysis, and consensus-based decision making.
As a result of the 2010 Census, the City of New Braunfels achieved the UZA threshold, with a population of 57,740. The City of New Braunfels and the City of Seguin are interested in jointly pursuing the formation of a regional metropolitan planning organization within Comal and Guadalupe Counties.
Part of this process will be to create a preliminary regional transportation plan. The transportation plan will review existing plans for the cities and counties, make recommendations on the consistency of these plans, determine the appropriate types of roads, and review the environmental aspects of relocating or expanding roads and proposing new roadway alignments.
